Factually, it can also be said that the name Christmas comes from the season’s first service, the Christ-mass. And Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphany, which means manifestation. Although the month and date of Jesus’ birth are unknown, by the early-to-mid fourth century the Western Christian Church had placed Christmas on December 25th and the date has been universally adopted by the civil calendars.

 Origin and development

Merry Christmas

For Christians, the origin of Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Bible. However, in today’s world, we witness on December 25th each year Christians celebrate Christmas all over the world which has absolutely nothing to do with that blessed day, which probably occurred in early fall or late summer about 2,000 years ago. In fact, most of the customs and traditions of Christmas actually pre-date the birth of Jesus, which happens to be argued many times and there are different school of thoughts about the exact Christmas celebration and its origin and many of them are downright deceptive in their meaning and origin. Variations of this pagan holiday flourished throughout the first few centuries after Jesus Christ. But it probably wasn’t until 336 AD that Emperor Constantine officially converted this pagan tradition into the “Christians” holiday of Christmas.

Contemporary Customs in the West

Merry Christmas

The middle of winter has long been a time of Christmas celebration throughout the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man who now is referred to as Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter at least that was the old custom. Many peoples rejoiced when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days. And extended hours of sunlight as part of the ritual routine.

In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrate with great joy the Yule from December 21, the winter continues until January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs.  Which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days sometimes 15. The Norse used to believe that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the upcoming year.

Contemporary Customs in the Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy

Merry Christmas

Eastern Christianity is a pure mixture of church families that got strengthened outside the Occident, with major subdivisions such as the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox churches, the Eastern Catholic churches, and the denominations descended from the Assyrian Church of the East. The Ukrainian Lutheran Church is also part of an Eastern Christian church that uses the Byzantine Rite. The term is used in contrast with Western Christianity (namely the Latin Church and most of Protestantism), although its scope has been one of continual discussion
